These Fuel-Sipping Sedans Are Worth a Look for Shoppers

While shoppers are increasingly turning to electric vehicles to avoid the gas pump, EVs don’t work for everyone. They are often more expensive than their internal combustion counterparts, and finding a public charging station can be challenging in some parts of the country. So, what is the solution? A fuel-efficient four-door sedan can alleviate the pressure at the pump while providing suitable space and a wide range of amenities.

In this slideshow, we rank sedans primarily by their gas mileage, but we also take pricing and the U.S. News overall scores into account. We use combined mpg from the Environmental Protection Agency, and for sedans with multiple fuel economy estimates, we show the highest and best rating in that vehicle’s lineup. For added convenience, the vehicles listed here do not require plugging in.

Some scores may not match what you see in our reviews because we update the scores on our site as we add expert reviews and data.

Here’s a look at the 12 most fuel-efficient four-door sedans on the market.

Next:2023 Volkswagen Jetta

Volkswagen of America, Inc.

2023 Volkswagen Jetta

$20,655 | Combined Fuel Economy: 35 mpg | Overall Score: 7.7/10

Volkswagen doesn’t offer the ultra-efficient (but emissions-heavy) diesel TDI anymore, but the gas-powered Jetta is still one of the most efficient sedans in America.

The only European model on this list, the Jetta features a roomy interior with good space front and back, but the extensive use of hard plastics gives the cabin a cheap look. The standard 6.5-inch touch screen is small by today’s standards, but there is an 8-inch screen available, which also adds wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. Ample trunk space adds to the Jetta’s overall utility; however, the 60/40 folding rear seats don’t fold completely flat.

Volkswagen offers the Jetta with two engine options, and while the standard 6-speed manual transmission improves driving engagement, the optional 8-speed automatic transmission delivers the best fuel economy.

Next:2023 Nissan Versa

Nissan North America, Inc.

2023 Nissan Versa

$15,730 | Combined Fuel Economy: 35 mpg | Overall Score: 7.7/10

The Nissan Versa’s 35 mpg may put it near the bottom of this list, but that’s still a rather impressive figure. It may be one of the lowest-priced sedans in America, but the Versa doesn’t feel cheap.

Quality materials and a spacious interior make the Versa a great value, especially with several driver-assistance features coming standard on all trim levels. Popular features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also available.

The Versa may feel low on power in some situations, but in most instances, the 122-horsepower engine is sufficient for getting around town. With good handling and a decent ride, the Versa’s low price and high fuel efficiency make it a great sedan option.

Next:2023 Kia Rio

2023 Kia Rio

2023 Kia Rio

$16,550 | Combined Fuel Economy: 36 mpg | Overall Score: 7.8/10

Another low-priced option on this list, the Rio has a user-friendly infotainment system in addition to its good fuel economy ratings. While advanced safety features are minimal on the base-level trim, the Rio is still a good value when upgrading to the S trim. This upgrade adds driver-assistance features as well as goodies like keyless entry and an additional USB port.

The Rio’s 1.6-liter engine doesn’t bring much excitement to the drive, but it gets the job done, although it gets loud when pushed hard. Overall, the Rio feels solid and comfortable with a stylish design and reasonable trunk space.

Next:2023 Honda Civic

American Honda Motor Co., Inc.

2023 Honda Civic

$23,750 | Combined Fuel Economy: 36 mpg | Overall Score: 8.7/10

The Civic sets the bar for compact sedans and earns the highest overall score on this list of fuel-efficient four-doors. It may not be the bargain it once was, but even priced in the low $20,000s, the Civic is a great value.

The roomy cabin feels well put together with an upscale vibe, thanks to the soft-touch surfaces and an easy-to-use infotainment system. Civic also comes standard with driver-assistance features like adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist.

Multiple engines are offered; however, the 180-horsepower turbocharged engine delivers the best fuel economy and impressive performance. The Civic is fun to drive with excellent handling courtesy of the crisp steering and taut suspension.

Next:2023 Mitsubishi Mirage

Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.

2023 Mitsubishi Mirage

$16,245 | Combined Fuel Economy: 37 mpg | Overall Score: 5.0/10

The Mitsubishi Mirage is the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid sedan in America, and it boasts one of the lowest starting prices for a new car. While these two aspects are among the most important to car shoppers, the Mirage does not score well overall.

The Mirage’s 78-horsepower engine makes it the least-powerful model on the market. The ride is somewhat stiff and inside a bit cramped with a lot of wind and engine noise entering the cabin.

The Mirage comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and it features a user-friendly infotainment system with a 7-inch touch screen. However, that’s not enough to make the Mirage enticing, even with its excellent fuel economy. There are too many better options for a similar price, like the Nissan Versa or Kia Rio.

Next:2023 Toyota Crown

Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.

2023 Toyota Crown

$39,950 | Combined Fuel Economy: 41 mpg | Overall Score: 6.0/10

The Crown is an all-new model for the Toyota lineup, replacing the Avalon as the top-level sedan in the lineup. The Crown has a raised suspension and unique style, almost mimicking SUV looks in a four-door sedan.

While the raised seating position and sloped roof reduce headroom, overall, the cabin is spacious and comfortable. The infotainment system is reasonably easy to use, and the Crown comes with a healthy list of standard equipment that includes most of the expected advanced driver-assist features.

The Crown is offered exclusively as a hybrid with all-wheel drive. Two engine choices are available, with the standard (and most fuel-efficient) setup putting out 236 horsepower. Teamed with a continuously variable transmission, the hybrid powertrain delivers reasonable performance, although it does drone when pushed hard.

Next:2023 Lexus ES Hybrid

Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.

2023 Lexus ES Hybrid

$42,640 | Combined Fuel Economy: 44 mpg | Overall Score: 8.1/10

One of the most fuel-efficient luxury sedans on the market, the Lexus ES Hybrid delivers the premium experience buyers expect from Toyota’s luxury brand. High-end materials are found throughout the cabin, and there’s plenty of space for both passengers and cargo.

Lexus introduced an updated infotainment system for the 2023 model year, which is a significant improvement over the old system and adds wireless connectivity for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Lexus offers the ES 300h with a single hybrid powertrain that uses a four-cylinder engine and two electric motors. With 215 horsepower, the ES Hybrid has adequate power for the daily drive, and while handling is good, the suspension is designed to elevate luxury over sportiness.

Next:2023 Honda Accord Hybrid

American Honda Motor Co., Inc.

2023 Honda Accord Hybrid

$31,895 | Combined Fuel Economy: 48 mpg | Overall Score: 8.6/10

Honda redesigned the Accord Hybrid for the 2023 model year, and it is our highest-ranking model in the hybrid cars category. It has an upscale cabin that borders on luxury-model quality. The clean design features a 12.3-inch touch screen with crisp graphics and an intuitive, easy-to-navigate infotainment system. The Accord Hybrid comes standard with a long list of popular features like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist.

The Accord Hybrid features a hybrid powertrain with two electric motors and a gas engine that acts primarily as a generator for smoother, quieter operation. With 204 horsepower, the Accord Hybrid feels quick with good throttle response.

Next:2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid

Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.

2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid

$22,800 | Combined Fuel Economy: 50 mpg | Overall Score: 7.8/10

With impressive fuel efficiency and a low starting price, the Corolla Hybrid is a great option for first-time buyers. The cabin is roomy, with large, comfortable front seats, and while the rear row provides ample legroom, taller passengers will find the headroom lacking. The infotainment system features an 8-inch touch screen with crisp graphics and simple operation, and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come standard.

With 138 horsepower from its hybrid powertrain, the front-wheel drive (all-wheel drive is available) Corolla Hybrid smoothly switches from gas to electric power. While it won’t win any races, the small Toyota is responsive around town, although power is lacking at higher speeds, and the engine gets buzzy when pushed hard.

Next:2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.

2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid

$28,355 | Combined Fuel Economy: 52 mpg | Overall Score: 8.5/10

With a stylish design, roomy interior, and extensive standard features, it’s no wonder that the Camry is one of the most popular sedans in America. The Camry Hybrid offers a spacious cabin with comfortable seats for front and rear passengers and good trunk space, adding to this sedan’s utility. But the Camry isn’t perfect – the standard infotainment system has begun to feel dated, with a small 7-inch display and a low-resolution rear-view camera.

Toyota offers the Camry Hybrid with a 208-horsepower hybrid powertrain. Power is more than adequate, delivering spritely acceleration around town, but the Camry Hybrid feels a bit underpowered when trying to overtake slower vehicles or merge onto the highway. Overall, the ride is smooth and comfortable, although some may find the regenerative brakes too grabby.

Next:2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Hyundai Motor America

2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

$27,950 | Combined Fuel Economy: 52 mpg | Overall Score: 8.6/10

Both the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and Toyota Camry Hybrid are rated at an impressive 52 mpg, but the Sonata edges out the Camry in this list with a slightly higher overall score.

With standout exterior styling featuring unique LED signature lighting, the Sonata Hybrid is elegant inside and out. High-end materials give this Hyundai the appearance of a luxury sedan, and the roomy, quiet cabin provides ample space for all five passengers, as well as plenty of cargo room. The list of standard equipment is long and includes several driver-assistance features.

The Sonata Hybrid feels quick off the line thanks to its responsive hybrid powertrain, putting out 192 horsepower. While the six-speed automatic transmission can deliver harsh shifts, the overall ride is smooth and comfortable, even over the harshest bumps.

Next:2023 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid

Hyundai Motor America

2023 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid

$24,400 | Combined Fuel Economy: 54 mpg | Overall Score: 8.3/10

Boasting excellent fuel economy and a low starting price, the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid tops this list of fuel-efficient sedans. With a roomy, comfortable cabin and an extensive list of standard equipment, the Elantra Hybrid is hard to beat as quality, efficient transportation. The cabin does feel a little cheap with considerable use of hard plastics, but it is still well thought out, with intuitive controls and a standard 8-inch touch screen.

It may be the most efficient non-electric sedan in America, but that doesn’t mean the Elantra Hybrid lacks performance. Its 1.6-liter engine is paired with an electric motor and a dual-clutch 6-speed automatic transmission, delivering peppy acceleration. With smooth shifts and almost imperceptible transitions from electric to gas, the Elantra Hybrid is a pleasure to drive.
