Though not particularly exciting, the base 191-horsepower four-cylinder engine is adequate for daily driving needs. The available 180-horsepower turbo-four has a bit stronger acceleration.

The cabin has a sleek design and high-end materials. It’s also a quiet vehicle that insulates well against outside noise. Standard infotainment features include an 8-inch touch screen, a six-speaker stereo, HD Radio, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Cargo space is decent, and the standard split-folding rear seats make it a bit easier to stow larger items.

Inside, apart from a few soft-touch surfaces on the dashboard and doors, most of the cabin is trimmed with hard and rather cheap-looking plastics. A 7-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard.

The Subaru BRZ is a practical sports car with a zesty flat four-cylinder engine and a choice of manual or automatic transmissions. It has a comfortable ride and a well-built interior, though there’s not a whole lot of room for passengers or cargo.

Beneath the hood, the 2.4-liter engine puts out 228 horsepower, and rear-wheel drive comes standard. This sports car has great acceleration and plenty of passing power.

Inside, the cabin feels a bit cramped, especially in the back, and there’s only 6.3 cubic feet of trunk space. The easy-to-use infotainment system has an 8-inch touch screen with well-placed buttons and knobs. The only standard driver-assistance feature is a rearview camera.

The Kia EV6 is a well-rounded vehicle that sits at the top of our electric SUVs category. Along with a great driving range, it offers athletic handling, swift acceleration and fun driving dynamics. Buyers will also appreciate the long list of standard features.

All versions of the 2023 Kia EV6 come with a 77.4-kWh battery. The vehicle can go up to 310 miles on a single charge, but note that all-wheel drive models will only see about 250 miles. It handles well, with confident cornering and plenty of feedback through the steering wheel.

The sturdy cabin offers nice materials and a straightforward design. There is plenty of room for five adults in two rows with supportive and comfortable seats. The standard infotainment system includes a 12.3-inch touch screen, navigation, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The list of standard safety features is long and includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and lane-keep assist.

The base four-cylinder engine offers 191 horsepower paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It feels strained at highway speeds. We recommend that buyers upgrade to a 281-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder, which has much more power. Models with the base engine will see 25 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The turbo-four sees a few miles less per gallon

The Santa Fe offers average cargo space for its class, and the cabin feels luxurious, with only a few lower-quality surfaces. Standard infotainment features include an 8-inch touch screen, wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto. There’s also a long list of standard driver-assistance features.

The only hybrid on our list, the Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid is a top contender in the hybrid SUV class due to its peppy powertrains, comfortable interior and excellent cargo space. Buyers will also appreciate the long list of standard features. However, it doesn’t get great fuel economy by hybrid SUV standards.

Every 2023 Santa Fe Hybrid boasts a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, an electric motor and a six-speed automatic transmission. The Blue trim sees 36 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, while the other trims return 33 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. The ride is gentle, and the standard all-wheel drive helps provide ample road grip.

The interior boasts nice materials, with a standard 10.25-inch touch screen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Redesigned for 2023, the RX 350 is a good choice in the luxury midsize SUV category. It has an upscale and airy interior, plenty of tech and safety features and a punchy turbocharged four-cylinder engine. We give it high marks for its smooth and composed ride.

The cabin seats five and offers plenty of padded, soft-touch plastics with metallic accents. The dashboard is uncluttered and anchored by a 9.8-inch touch screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The display offers sleek graphics and prompt responses, but just about everything must be adjusted on-screen through a lot of distracting submenus.

The turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine produces 275 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard; all-wheel drive is available.

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma is made for adventure and is one of the more capable off-roaders in the compact pickup truck class. It handles well and offers lots of active safety features. However, it loses points for a rough ride and lack of passenger space.

Under the hood, buyers will find a 159-horsepower four-cylinder engine. Unfortunately, it feels underpowered for most driving situations. The available V6 with 278 horsepower is better but still lacks punchy acceleration.

The solidly built cabin has a blend of soft-touch surfaces and some low-rent plastics. It will seat four people in the standard Access Cab body style and five people in the available Double Cab style. The infotainment system is easy to use and has a 7-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa and voice recognition. There’s also a nice list of standard driver-assistance features.

The Ram 1500 is the only full-size truck on the list. Its roomy and well-appointed interior makes it just as capable as a comfortable family vehicle as it is of doing typical truck tasks like towing and hauling.

Buyers can choose from four engines, including a naturally aspirated V6 and V8s, a diesel V6 and a supercharged V8. Each is mated to a slick eight-speed automatic transmission that helps deliver admirable performance. The base engine is plenty for everyday use.

The interior sets the bar for cabin quality and atmosphere in this class. The only downside is the small, standard 5-inch infotainment screen. If you want a larger touch screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, you will have to purchase additional features. Buyers can also add adjustable tie-downs, a bed extender, in-bed lighting and more.
