Aspiring Automotive Engineer Terry Charlemagne
[Written by Anya Thompson]
At Cedarbridge Academy, some students shine not just in academics but also in practical, hands-on fields. Terry Charlemagne, a dedicated student with a passion for mechanics, is one of them. From turbocharged car projects to mastering vehicle operation, Terry has cultivated a distinctive skill set that distinguishes him from his peers.
An Early Spark of Interest
Terry’s fascination with mechanics began at just seven years old, when his uncle introduced him to the world of performance vehicles with his Mazda RX-7. “I started getting interested in mechanics from a young age when my uncle had me working on little things that needed to be done on his car,” Terry remembers. This early exposure sparked a passion that has only intensified over the years.
For Terry, the joy of mechanics comes from the learning experience itself. “You learn something new every time you lay your hands on an engine, machine, or any component,” he shares. His enthusiasm for uncovering the complexities of mechanical systems motivates him to embrace new challenges with every project.
Building Skills and Tackling Projects
Throughout his studies, Terry has acquired a diverse set of technical skills, ranging from understanding vehicle mechanics to operating forklifts and both manual and automatic vehicles. His hands-on experience has also highlighted the importance of teamwork. “Being a team player is essential,” Terry acknowledges, understanding that collaboration is key to achieving intricate mechanical objectives.
One project that stands out for him is Bermuda’s first turbocharged performance car. Terry and his teachers transformed a 2006 Daihatsu Sirion into a sports rally car, reimagining everything from its engine system to its exterior design. “This project was particularly special because it allowed me to apply my skills to create something truly unique.”
Facing and Overcoming Challenges
Like many students diving into new technical fields, Terry has faced his share of challenges. The toughest? Welding. “There are specific techniques and knowledge required to weld materials together,” he explains. However, with support from his teachers, Terry pushed through, mastering the complexities of welding through hands-on practice and mentorship. “They shared all their knowledge with me, and I improved with practice.”
A Vision for the Future
Looking forward, Terry is focused on a career in Automotive Engineering. “I have a strong passion for designing, building, and modifying cars,” he shares excitedly. One of his goals for the coming year is to construct another turbocharged performance vehicle and share his knowledge with his classmates, helping them feel the same thrill he experiences in the garage.
Support from CedarBridge Academy
Terry’s journey has been bolstered at every turn by his school community. From his instructors, Mr. Lindsay and Mr. Clarke, to the Maker Space teacher Mr. Lowe, the maintenance department, and Principal Kenneth Caesar, Terry has had a dedicated team cheering him on.
In addition to the support around him, Terry has made the best use of limited resources, leveraging both personal and school tools. Despite some limitations, his creativity and determination have enabled him to succeed.
Advice for Aspiring Mechanics
For students who are keen on mechanics, Terry has some straightforward advice, “Build relationships with your teachers and demonstrate your genuine interest. They’ll provide you with opportunities to display your talents.” He emphasizes the importance of balancing mechanics with academics and other pursuits, mentioning that he often utilizes his free time at school or on weekends to focus on his projects.
Terry Charlemagne’s journey illustrates how passion, determination, and community support can empower students to achieve extraordinary goals. As he continues to refine his skills and impart his knowledge to others, CedarBridge Academy can take pride in having Terry as one of their own—a future automotive engineer in the making.
