Clark County offers up to $975 to help fix car emission problems

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Clark County has more than half a million dollars annually available to help residents pay for car emission repairs through its Smog Free Clark County program.

The program provides up to $975 to help vehicle owners fix emission problems and pass smog tests. The county operates the program to reduce emissions in Clark County and help people pay for what could be expensive repairs.

“We provided up to $975 voucher so they can get their cars back out on the road so they can get to work, pick up their kids from school, or whatever they have to do,” said Kevin MacDonald, Public Information Officer with Clark County’s Department of Environment and Sustainability.

Program requirements and process

To qualify for the program, vehicles must be between model years 2006-1968 and must have failed a smog test in the last 12 months with proper documentation. Applicants must own the car and live in Clark County.

“The program was created in response to changes in Nevada State law that raised the requirements for classic vehicle, classic rod, and old-timer license plates,” according to Smog Free Clark County.

Kevin MacDonald said the program has helped more than 1,100 vehicles get repaired in the last three years.

Residents can call or apply online. After approval, they receive a voucher and can take their vehicle to one of several shops the county works with.

“You let them know that you have the voucher with the vehicle. And then they take it from there and they’ll do an inspection. Then, after that, they’ll know what’s wrong with the vehicle. And then they’ll give you your options of what repairs can be done,” said Jason Haden, Smog Operations Manager with Smog Free Clark County. “If it’s under the 975 or up to the 975, everybody’s happy. We get it done, no cost to them.”

If repairs cost more than $975, vehicle owners pay the difference. For example, if repairs cost $1,075, the owner would pay $100.

The program receives more than $500,000 annually, which officials say does not come from taxpayer money. The funding comes from a portion of air permit fees, such as when a business applies for a dust permit on a construction site.
