‘Fix-It Day’ Offers Free Car Repairs To Those Living in Vehicles
LOS ANGELES, CA — For the reported thousands of people who temporarily live in their cars in Los Angeles, reliable transport is essential, which is why Sunday’s Fix-It Day 2025 — offering free car repairs for the needy — could be a life-changing event.
Those who depend on a vehicle for shelter know that a broken-down car can mean lost employment, missed medical appointments or the inability to provide for a family.
Fix-It Day, taking place in Los Angeles at the Petersen Automotive Museum and Chris’ Auto Service, aims to restore not just vehicles but also hope and stability to some of the most vulnerable members of the community, organizers said.
The event provides a crucial intervention, ensuring that struggling families and individuals can keep their cars running, maintain their jobs and schooling and stay connected to essential services, said Ray Drasnin, Fix-It Day’s media coordinator.
“Reliable transportation is essential for economic stability,” he said. “A single breakdown can spiral into job loss and deeper financial hardship. This event is about preventing that.”
Fix-It Day 2025 is made possible through an alliance of businesses, nonprofits and volunteers. At the front is CarParts.com, a national automotive parts dealer, alongside Safe Parking LA, a nonprofit dedicated to providing safe overnight parking and resources to those living in their cars.
Additional partners include the mobile repairs company Wrench; oils and additives company Liqui Moly; The Lime Truck food catering; and Pacific Nexus, handing logistics.
Utilizing a team of mechanics and volunteers, Fix-It Day will offer critical services such as brake replacements, battery changes, tire repairs and oil changes — all free of charge, Drasnin said.
Beyond immediate repairs, participants will also receive a one-year membership to CarParts+, offering roadside assistance and discounted automotive services.
According to event organizers, Fix-It Day extends beyond car maintenance. The event is also an opportunity to connect individuals with support networks, including Safe Parking LA’s case management services, which help participants transition into permanent housing.
“Fix-It Day is more than just a one-day event — it’s a movement,” said Zaheer Goodman-Bhyat, one of the event’s organizers. “By addressing the immediate need for vehicle repairs, we’re helping people move forward in life.”
