Most people don’t think about auto repairs until something goes wrong. That’s when the stress kicks in — along with the potential for an expensive mistake. In late 2024, J.D. Power reported that repair costs had surged 26% in the prior two years, making due diligence more important than ever. To save money, frugal car owners ask the right questions before signing off on major repairs.

GOBankingRates spoke with Bill Nalu, owner of Interstate Auto Care, to find out what those questions should be. He’s been in the industry for over 23 years and has seen what happens when people don’t do their due diligence.

Asking the right things can separate those who make informed decisions from those who overpay or end up with subpar work. Here are eight questions Nalu recommended frugal drivers ask their mechanics before getting major repairs done.

Also see five signs you need a second opinion before getting a major car repair.

How Long Has the Shop Been in Business?

A shop that’s been around for decades didn’t survive by ripping people off, with longevity often meaning a solid reputation. Newer shops might offer deals to build a customer base, but they can also be more of a gamble.

Is the Shop a Franchise or Family-Owned?

Franchise shops follow corporate pricing and often have higher overheads, which can mean higher costs to the customer. Independent shops may have more flexibility in terms of being able to offer discounts and might also use high-quality aftermarket parts instead of pricier dealership parts.

Are the Technicians Certified?

Some states don’t require certification, so it’s worth asking.

A shop with Automotive Service Excellence-certified techs has invested in training, which can mean a better repair done right the first time — saving money in the long run.

What’s the Average Tenure of Employees?

Long-term employees usually understand the needs of customers more, leading to better all-round service. And a high turnover of staff can mean rushed work, inexperience or misdiagnoses — leading to more repairs down the line.

How Long Is the Warranty, and Does It Cover Nationwide?

A weak warranty often means a shop doesn’t stand behind its work. A strong one, especially with nationwide coverage, can prevent paying for the same repair twice if something fails on a road trip.

Is Alternative Transportation Available?

Paying for a rental while a car is being repaired adds to the overall cost, particularly if the car is going to be in the shop for a few days or even longer. Some shops offer free loaner cars or discounted rentals, which can make a multiday repair much more affordable.

How Familiar Is the Shop With the Vehicle’s Make and Model?

A mechanic unfamiliar with a car might take longer to diagnose and repair it — meaning more labor costs. Shops that regularly work on a particular make can get the job done faster and more efficiently.

How Many Similar Repairs Have Been Done on This Model?

A shop that’s done the same repair dozens of times knows the common pitfalls, potential part failures and cost-effective solutions, reducing the chance of unnecessary work or repeat visits.
