Best American-Made SUVs in 2023

For this article, we’ve defined an American-made SUV as one assembled in a U.S. plant. The list includes vehicles from America’s legacy “domestic” automakers, start-up carmakers such as Tesla, and U.S. plants operated by foreign-nameplate auto brands, such as Honda.

Some of the vehicles on this list are built in multiple factories, including plants outside the U.S. If getting a U.S.-made model is important to you, check the vehicle’s Monroney sticker (aka the “window sticker”), its doorsill-mounted build plate or its vehicle identification number (VIN) to ensure it was built in America.

The 2023 Genesis Electrified GV70 takes the popular GV70 luxury crossover and swaps its gas-fueled powertrain with a dual-motor electric setup that makes 429 horsepower in everyday driving and up to 483 horsepower for short stints in boost mode.

In our luxury electric SUV ranking, the all-new Electrified GV70 earns a spot in the upper tier of the list. It offers a pleasant ride with a responsive handling. It can travel an estimated 236 miles on a single charge. When tethered to a properly equipped DC fast charger, the electric GV70 can charge from 10% to 80% in as little as 18 minutes.

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L is built in one of Detroit’s newest production facilities, the Stellantis Detroit Assembly Complex Mack plant. It’s an all-new plant, though it’s located at a century-old manufacturing site.

Claiming a spot near the top of our midsize SUV rankings, the Grand Cherokee L is a roomy three-row, six- or seven-seat SUV with ample passenger space and, when properly equipped, the ability to tackle off-road obstacles that would defeat most rivals. It’s available with a choice of a 293-horsepower V6 or a 357-horsepower V8. When properly equipped, it can tow up to 7,200 pounds.

Jeep offers the Grand Cherokee L in six trim levels, ranging from the well-equipped Laredo to the luxurious Summit Reserve, with Palermo leather upholstery and an infotainment display for the front-seat passenger.

The hybrid version of the Santa Fe was the first electrified vehicle Hyundai produced in the United States. It has since been joined by other electrified models at the company’s Alabama plant.

The 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid is a two-row crossover with a 226-horsepower hybrid powertrain and standard all-wheel drive. Its five-seat cabin is roomy, plus it offers above-average cargo room compared to class rivals. It’s covered by Hyundai’s excellent 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, as well.

Each Hyundai Santa Fe comes equipped with a long list of advanced safety and driver assistance technologies, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, a rear seat alert and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection.

While the standard Santa Fe Hybrid is built in the American Southeast, the Santa Fe Plug-in Hybrid is built solely in Korea.

The 2023 Chevrolet Traverse may not win any awards for flash, but it’s a roomy, comfortable crossover with a refined ride and a potent 310-horsepower V6 up front. You can get a Traverse with either front or all-wheel drive.

General Motors builds the Traverse in Lansing, Michigan.

The Traverse includes either an easy-to-use 7- or 8-inch touch-screen infotainment system. Both systems support wireless Android Auto, wireless Apple CarPlay and an onboard Wi-Fi hot spot. All trims include tri-zone automatic climate control, proximity key entry and push-button start.

Chevy outfits the Traverse with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, plus a long list of additional safety and driver assistance technologies.

Honda completely redesigned its compact hybrid crossover for 2023. The 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid features the company’s fourth-generation hybrid powertrain, which uses a four-cylinder engine and a pair of electric motors to make 204 horsepower. Front-wheel drive comes standard, with all-wheel drive available.

In our hybrid SUV rankings, the CR-V Hybrid earns a spot near the top of the list. It offers a spacious cabin with ample room for adults in both rows and an above-average amount of cargo room. It earns EPA fuel economy estimates as high as 43 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. Those numbers are good, but they’re not class-leading.

The CR-V Hybrid is built in three North American plants, including Greensburg, Indiana and East Liberty, Ohio, in the United States. All CR-V hybrid powertrains come from Honda’s Anna, Ohio engine plant.

Hyundai’s Santa Fe hails from the Gulf Coast state of Alabama, where it’s built alongside the Hyundai Santa Cruz pickup, Hyundai Elantra sedan and Hyundai Tucson crossover.

Hyundai packs the Santa Fe with a long list of standard safety and driver assistance technology, including automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist and driver drowsiness monitoring. Several more safety technologies are available, including a blind-spot camera and a head-up display.

Buying a Santa Fe is a good long-term plan, as it’s covered by one of the best warranties in the industry.

Luxury automaker BMW has plants around the world. One of its largest, and the maker of many of its SUVs, is here in America. The Spartanburg, South Carolina assembly complex is responsible for producing the 2023 BMW X7, the company’s flagship luxury SUV.

BMW offers the X7 with a trio of engines, starting with an eager 375-horsepower inline-six-cylinder turbo and rising to twin-turbo V8s that make as much as 631 horsepower. All are matched with eight-speed automatic transmissions and standard all-wheel drive.

Inside, there’s room for six or seven, depending on how you configure its three-row interior. As you would expect from an SUV with a nearly $80,000 base price, the X7’s interior design and materials are nearly flawless.

Lincoln offers two versions of the Aviator. You can choose from gas-only-powered Aviators with 400-horsepower twin-turbo V6 engines under the hood while the Aviator Grand Touring trims include a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrain that produces 494 horsepower.

The Aviator PHEV can travel an EPA-estimated 21 miles on electricity alone before seamlessly transitioning to traditional hybrid operation.

The Aviator offers a spacious cabin with ample cargo room and high-quality materials. There’s seating for up to seven with a second-row bench seat or six with captain’s chairs. All Aviators feature 10.1-inch SYNC 3 touch-screen infotainment systems that support Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and an onboard Wi-Fi hot spot.

The 2023 Honda CR-V is so popular that Honda needs multiple plants to build enough of them. That includes two plants in the U.S.: East Liberty, Ohio and Greensburg, Indiana.

In its first year after a major redesign, the 2023 CR-V claims a spot near the top of our compact SUV rankings. What makes the CR-V stand out in the segment is its roomy and upscale cabin, great cargo-carrying capacity and good fuel economy. There’s plenty of room for five and all of their stuff.

Propelling the CR-V is a 190-horsepower turbo-four that’s matched with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and front- or all-wheel drive. It’s EPA rated at up to 28 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway.

The 2023 Cadillac Escalade and its long-wheelbase Escalade ESV sibling are the brand’s luxury flagships. They’re made in Arlington, Texas, alongside GM’s other body-on-frame SUVs. The Escalade claims a spot near the top of our luxury large SUV rankings.

There’s seating for as many as seven in the Escalade’s well-appointed cabin, along with an ample amount of cargo space. Opt for the long-wheelbase Escalade ESV and you’ll get even more cargo space. A 16.9-inch infotainment touch screen comes standard, as does a 7.2-inch command screen and a 14.2-inch digital instrument panel. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration is included.

The Escalade is available with a 420-horsepower gas V8, a 277-horsepower six-cylinder turbodiesel or a 682-horsepower supercharged V8. All are matched to 10-speed automatic transmissions. Properly equipped, the big Caddy can tow up to 8,200 pounds.

Spartanburg, South Carolina, is BMW’s worldwide center for SUV manufacturing. The plant’s vehicles, including the BMW X5, are exported to more than 120 countries.

The 2023 BMW X5 claims a spot near the top of our luxury midsize SUV rankings. It’s available in five- and seven-passenger interior setups, though its optional third row is cramped, even for kids. A 12.3-inch iDrive infotainment system comes standard, as does a 12.3-inch customizable instrument panel.

Power options include a 335-horsepower turbocharged six-cylinder engine, a plug-in hybrid powertrain with 389 horsepower and 31 miles of electric-only range that uses the turbo-six and an electric motor, a 523-horsepower twin-turbo V8 and a 600-horsepower twin-turbo V8. Properly equipped, the X5 can tow up to 7,200 pounds.

Though it’s a big SUV, it still rewards enthusiastic drivers with athletic, predictable handling.

The 2023 Jeep Wagoneer is the brand’s largest SUV, with three generous rows of seating. It’s built at Stellantis’ Warren Truck Plant near Detroit, Michigan.

Under the Wagoneer’s long hood, you’ll find a standard 392-horsepower V8 fitted with a mild-hybrid system that boosts acceleration and slightly improves fuel economy. Available for 2023 is a twin-turbo inline-six that makes 420 horsepower. The powerplants are paired with eight-speed automatic transmissions and rear- or four-wheel drive.

Unlike many Jeeps, the Wagoneer isn’t Trail Rated. That’s not to say that its 8.3 inches of ground clearance, available air suspension and sophisticated four-wheel-drive system don’t make a capable off-road companion.

The Wagoneer seats up to eight and can tow up to 10,000 pounds when properly outfitted.

The Spartanburg, South Carolina-built 2023 BMW X3 is a highly -rated model in our ranking of luxury compact SUVs. The small crossover puts a smile on the face of its drivers with its deft handling and choice of lively powertrain options.

Base models are fitted with a 248-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine which offers ample thrust, despite its small size. Higher trims include turbocharged inline-six engines with power outputs ranging from 382 to 503 horsepower. Rear-wheel drive comes standard, though you can upgrade to all-wheel drive. The X3 can tow up to 4,400 pounds properly equipped.

The X3 seats five in its two rows. Synthetic leather seats come standard, with genuine leather upholstery available. Infotainment systems with 10.25- or 12.3-inch screens are available, as is either a traditional analog gauge cluster or a 12.3-inch customizable instrument panel.

The 2023 Hyundai Tucson is one of several vehicles on this list to come from Hyundai’s busy Montgomery, Alabama auto plant. According to Hyundai, the assembly complex directly employs 3,800 people and can build 399,500 vehicles per year.

All Tucsons come standard with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a rear seat alert and driver-drowsiness monitoring.

Mercedes-Benz is quickly transitioning its offerings to an electric future. As part of that shift, it’s starting to build electric vehicles in the United States. The first electric SUV to come out of its Tuscaloosa County, Alabama plant is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV.

The EQS SUV scores a spot near the top of our luxury electric SUV rankings. As you would expect from an SUV with a starting price of $104,400, the EQS SUV offers an opulent cabin adorned with world-class materials and design. The EQS SUV comes standard with two rows of seats that seat five people; a third row is optional, boosting capacity to seven.

A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 12.8-inch infotainment touch screen come standard. However, you can upgrade to a 56-inch Hyperscreen setup, with three distinct displays behind the dash-spanning glass.

When it opened its Vance, Alabama plant, Mercedes-Benz was one of the first European automakers to step out of continental Europe to North America. Now the facility builds several Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-Maybach SUVs, exporting thousands of vehicles each year to 135 countries.

Mercedes offers the GLE with a variety of engines, ranging from a lively 255-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder to an impressive 603-horsepower twin-turbo V8. All but the rear-wheel-drive base model feature 4Matic all-wheel drive.

As you might expect, the GLE’s cabin is world-class, with top-notch materials and an ample supply of state-of-the-art cabin technology. All Mercedes GLEs are fitted with Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) touch-screen infotainment systems and digital instrument panels.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 is a popular luxury crossover claiming the top spot in our luxury compact SUV rankings. After initially being built in South Korea, production of the GV70 has shifted to the United States. It’s now built alongside several Hyundai vehicles in the company’s sprawling Montgomery, Alabama factory.

Genesis offers the GV70 with a choice of engines. The base engine is a potent 300-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder. For even more power, you can upgrade to the available 375-horsepower twin-turbo V6. Both engines are mated to eight-speed automatic transmissions and all-wheel drive.

The GV70’s five-seat cabin offers ample room for front-seat occupants and decent, but not exceptional, rear-seat space. Its modern and elegant design has top-notch materials and an impressive 14.5-inch touch-screen infotainment system. Eight- and 12.3-inch digital instrument clusters are available.

The state of Georgia’s only auto plant builds some of the most popular SUVs in America, including the 2023 Kia Telluride. The West Point manufacturing complex also assembles the 2023 Kia Sorento, the 2023 Kia K5 and the fully redesigned 2023 Kia Sportage.

In our ranking of midsize SUVs, the 2023 Kia Telluride claims a top spot. It’s a seven- or eight-seat three-row crossover with loads of cargo space, a well-crafted and roomy cabin, a great warranty and a high predicted reliability score. It won our 2023 Best 3-Row SUV for Families award.

For 2023, all Tellurides come standard with 12.3-inch touch-screen infotainment systems and have refreshed styling. A new off-road-focused X-Pro trim lets the Telluride go a bit further afield than many rival midsize crossovers.

The 2023 Lincoln Navigator is built in Louisville, Kentucky, alongside the Ford Expedition and Ford’s heavy-duty pickup trucks. The Navigator is Lincoln’s all-SUV lineup’s largest and most luxurious model. It’s also the top-scored vehicle in our luxury large SUV rankings.

With three rows of leather seats in its well-crafted cabin, the Navigator seats as many as eight. There’s plenty of cargo room, especially if you opt for the long-wheelbase Lincoln Navigator L. To make cargo loading easy, a hands-free power liftgate and power-folding rear seats come standard.

The Navigator’s power comes from a 440-horsepower twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 that makes an impressive 510 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive comes standard, with all-wheel drive available. Properly equipped, it can tow up to 8,700 pounds.

It is available with ActiveGlide, Lincoln’s new semi-automated driving technology.

According to its U.S. News Best Cars overall score, the best American-made SUV is the 2023 Rivian R1S. The all-electric R1S is built alongside the Rivian R1T pickup in Normal, Illinois.

Rivian offers the R1S in dual- and quad-motor versions with all-wheel drive and power outputs ranging from 600 to 835 horsepower. The quickest of the bunch – the R1S Quad-Motor AWD – can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in a Rivian-estimated 3.0 seconds. Depending on the model and battery pack you choose, you can expect to drive between 260 and 390 miles on a single charge.

The R1S offers three rows of seating with room for five adults in the first two rows and two kids in the cramped third row. There’s ample cargo space behind the rear seat, in the front trunk and under the rear load floor.
